Scanning
ScanSPOT accepts barcodes via the device camera, via a hardware scanner, or via the keyboard. The page on which you scan determines what happens with the barcode.
Which app you use depends on the device:
- Android devices with a built-in hardware scanner: the ScanSPOT app for Android.
- All other mobile devices, for example smartphones and tablets without a scanner: the Business Central app from Microsoft.
Business Central app
The Business Central app from Microsoft is available for Android, iPhone, and iPad. There, you scan with the camera or a keyboard scanner.
Camera
The Scan Barcode action opens the camera of the Business Central app. It is available on the task card, the position card, in the Bins and Bin Contents lists, and in the Inventory Overview. The input fields of the position card are also marked as barcode fields: The Business Central app shows a scan icon next to them.
Hardware scanners
ScanSPOT app for Android
The ScanSPOT app opens Business Central in the view for mobile devices and receives the scans of the built-in scanner via broadcast intent. For this, the scanner does not have to send like a keyboard. The app runs on Android 8.1 or later and connects to Business Central Online or on-premises, in each case with a production and a sandbox environment.
Installing and connecting
-
Install the app from the Google Play Store: Search for "ScanSPOT" or open the entry in the Play Store.
-
In the app, open Settings and enter the connection:
- Business Central Online: under Production and Sandbox, the name of the environment; if needed, under Connection, the Tenant (optional).
- On-premises: under Connection, turn on Business Central OnPrem
and enter the OnPrem Server, for example
https://meinserver:443. Under Production and Sandbox, you then specify the instance.
-
Sign in on the start screen. For Business Central Online and for on-premises with OnPrem Sign-in via Entra ID, tap Login. Otherwise, you sign in directly in Business Central after opening the environment.
-
Tap Production or Sandbox. Business Central opens with the user's Role Center.
Setting up the scanner
You set up the scanner in the app under Settings, group Scanner:
| Device | Setup |
|---|---|
| Zebra | Turn on Configure Scanner Automatically. The app creates the profile "ScanSPOT" in DataWedge. |
| Honeywell | Turn on Configure Scanner Automatically. The app takes over the scanner as long as it is open. |
| Newland | Set the output on the device to Broadcast. The app recognizes the manufacturer's intent. |
| Datalogic | On the device, set Intent Wedge with Broadcast. The app recognizes the manufacturer's intent. |
| other manufacturers | On the scanner, set up the output as a broadcast intent and enter its values in Custom Intent Action, Custom Intent Category, and Custom Data Key. |
Once you have set up a device, transfer the settings to other devices via QR code: In the Transfer Configuration group, Show QR Code displays the code, and Scan QR Code applies it on the new device. It is read with the hardware scanner, which must be able to read QR codes for this.
Keyboard scanners
Handheld scanners that send the barcode like a keyboard (keyboard wedge) also work in the Business Central app and in the browser.
- Set up the scanner so that it sends Enter or Tab after the barcode.
- On the mobile device, enable the option Enable Clipboard Fallback. ScanSPOT turns on the recognition of keyboard scanners only with this option.
Signal tones
ScanSPOT confirms each scan with a tone:
- Confirmation tone (high single tone): The barcode was recognized and applied.
- Error tone (low chord): The barcode does not match anything on the page.
Turn on the sound on the device to hear them.
